They work hard to create such wonderful communities, and spend from their own pockets to maintain them. I would much rather pay them the 1 and 5 $ a month their Patreons are set for, than be sold to advertisers myself and have to wade through the toxic sludge of big social. Mastodon makes my heart happy. <3
